January, 2015
On January 1, 2015, a body of bold and committed patrons for justice assumed their duties as officers and at-large members of the branch through December 31, 2016. Many of whom supplied resources, gave of their talents and remained actively engaged throughout the organizing and chartering phases. Reaching this point would not have been possible without the organizational and group management skills of Gwen Jones and the keen political and development sense of Nino Amato, who served as President and Vice President respectively. Thanks to all others who took on the roles of committee chairs, group leaders, volunteers and supporters who lent a part of their heart and soul in chartering a brighter future for all Dane County residents.
Founded Feb. 12, 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and most widely recognized grassroots civil rights organization. The NAACP's principal objective is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of minority group citizens and eliminate race prejudice. The NAACP seeks to remove all barriers of racial discrimination through the democratic processes. As a committee driven organization, the NAACP relies heavily on member participation to achieve meaningful success. Political Action, Veteran Services, Health and Environmental Justice, Labor and Industry, Economic Development, Criminal Justice, Youth Council and Education are just a few of the committees that give focus to our work. Our current membership stands over 300 and comprises great diversity, talent and passion. These will be necessary ingredients to energize the committees that will mobilize, improve and advance the lives of Dane County residents.
I encourage each member to actively engage in the organization - serve on a committee, support a project or activity, and offer your insight at meetings or online. The web page has been designed to accept comments and questions provide updated information about branch activities and inform the public about upcoming events. As a county wide branch, the general and town hall meetings and forums will be held at different sites throughout the county and at different locations in Madison, so that our members and the public can her from us and we from them.
The location of our branch, in Dane County and Madison, places additional responsibility upon us to connect, interact and engage with local and state policies and laws that negatively impact the lives of citizens. The Wisconsin NAACP Conference was the first northern state NAACP Conference to join the Moral Monday Movement. The coalition, Forward Together Wisconsin is comprised of clergy, social justice and civil rights organizations, labor and other community based organizations. We want to conserve the commitments of our constitution, seek justice where there is injustice, fight for the good of the whole, and ensure equal protection under the law.
Now I assume the presidency of this branch with a vision grounded in the foundation of our collective past, pointing to the highways of equality and equal opportunity, and engaging our communities as we seek justice for all.
Sincerely,
Gregory C. Jones, President
NAACP Dane County Branch
